Bachelor 3 / Urban project - Analysis

Presentation

During the 3rd year of university, the project was organized as an evolution of town planning to residential planning and finally designing a culture center.

The first stage consisted of analyzing the district by way of numerous site visits and desk research. It was then necessary to plan the design whilst taking into account the existing buildings.

All this work was done by a group of three people. We began by determining which existing buildings could be redeveloped. (In grey on the upper left plan.)

Then we reorganized the main roads to reduce the noise across the planned development.

Finally, once the new plots of land had been designated, we positioned spaces for housing (in the center) and those for commerce (on the periphery).

These offices act as an acoustic barrier protecting the central heart of the district from the noise of the railroad which borders the site.

After the district was organized, it was necessary to choose a plot of land to begin the individual building work. At first, the purpose was to organize this plot of land in a plan. The result was the implementation of the three main buildings of different typology as represented in photo 3.

Then it was necessary to concentrate on a welcoming space for the residential community. The requirement was to design four typologies going from student accommodation to T4.

To release the developed space, I made the decision to organize traffic in 4 columns giving way to passageways in the facade. They are kept by a metallic structure coming to settle against the building.

Every residential unit faces at least two aspects, and most have natural lighting to limit the required energy consumption.

The columns of traffic are situated at angles to the buildings to avoid creating spaces without windows.

The central garden possesses big trees to offer protection from the sun. Several ponds are used to store rainwater and reuse it for the watering of the green spaces. To connect both sections of the development, the biggest pond is lined by a vegetable garden and glazed wall. This wall also provides a wind-break to residents in the courtyard.
